Sanctuary Renovation Plans & Updates

NOTE: During sanctuary renovation, Bethel Fergus Falls will meet for worship in the Fellowship Hall
Congregational approval was required for moving forward with this proposal. It was approved by the congregation at our June 23, 2020 business meeting.
The motion from the elder board: "To approve renovations to Bethel's Sanctuary this summer, according to the Make Room plan, funded with cash from the capital account, up to a maximum of $200,000."
As we move forward, updates and plans will be posted below. Here is an introduction and overview of the project.
Bethel Family, the past 3 months of COVID-19 response have imposed unprecedented demands and adaptations upon us as a church, as families, and as individuals. As we have joyously moved back to in-person worship services, we have identified a critical and immediate challenge to address. The COVID-19 guidelines on social distancing in worship services has led to a pressing issue for Bethel.
The rigidity of the current pew seating in the sanctuary allows for zero flexibility to adapt for distance between rows or grouping of seats for individuals or families. The impact and restriction of roping off more than half of the pews is evidence of the obvious. We are already overflowing into the foyer for worship services. The seating challenges in September will become exponentially more difficult.
We now have a schematic design of the renovation concept.
(Download the PDF file of the schematic design to view the concept. Also, follow along on the MAKE ROOM page for future updates) The most compelling element of this design is that there are two (2) level seating zones, separated by an 18” height differential. The two levels are traversed by multiple ADA ramps and steps. There are tremendous benefits to this design:
  • Lower Cost, Faster completion.
    - The front platform will NOT need to be rebuilt (modifications/improvements may be featured)
    - The side doors in front will NOT need to be raised.
    - Much less fill is required.
    - The Organ will not be disturbed.
  • Project Completion: 4-6 weeks.
  • Provides a visually defined and aesthetically attractive area for more intimate services in the front section (estimated: 184 seats).
  • Higher total seating capacity (total estimated: 379) for larger services using both levels.
The permit from the city has already been acquired to perform the renovation. There are numerous discussions being held right now with subcontractors to determine their availability to do demolition, saw cutting, concrete, electrical, flooring, and furnishings. No work will be started until we have a commitment for every component necessary to complete the project before the start of the fall ministry season.
